🗞️ How to write newsletters that get replies
In this issue, we discuss How to get more replies, 6 awesome hooks, and creating a toolkit
Hi there,👋
Hope everyone is doing good.
I was chatting with a newsletter creator this week, and he asked:
“How accurate are open rates, really?”
It made me curious too, so I thought we could run a little experiment together 👀
(Confession: I do love answering polls — they’re quick and often anonymous,
however, I rarely reply to emails… maybe because I’m shy, or maybe just because I’m French so a little rude 😅)
But I’ve decided to be more communicative and engaged in the space, to really immerse myself in the community instead of just watching from the sidelines.
And you should do the same :)
So let’s see how this goes.
If enough of you vote, we might get a glimpse of how accurate those open rates really are.

THE MAIN THING
📈 How To Write Newsletters That Get Replies
Replies to your newsletter are one of the best ways to measure reader engagement.
But few publishers have great reply rates because they're not placing "reply points" throughout their newsletter.
Most creators drop a “Hit reply and tell me what you think” at the end, and then wonder why nobody does.
Let's change that!
If you want more replies to your newsletter, you have to engineer them. People rarely message unless you make it feel natural, easy, and worth their time.
Here are 3 ways to encourage replies
1. Be wrong on purpose.
Not factually wrong, but temptingly incomplete. Share a strong opinion, then add "But I might be missing something here."
Readers love to fill in the gaps and tell you what you're not considering.
2. Use a forced choice question.
Don't ask "What are your thoughts on newsletter monetization?" That requires too much mental effort.
Instead, ask "Are you making more money from ads, digital products or paid subscriptions right now?" Reply with one option.
Simple questions get more responses.
3. Create emotional openings.
I'm not saying you need to pour your heart out all over the page.
Just write something honest or surprising, then say, “Has this ever happened to you?” Being genuine is important, and it helps build a sense of community.
People respond to vulnerability and honesty more than polish.
Reward your readers
Finally, it's important to reward readers who message you.
You could mention readers in future issues, summarize their interesting takes, or just say 'thanks' personally.
The goal isn't to turn every newsletter into a survey. It's to remind readers that a real person wrote this, and that real person really wants to hear from them.
How many replies do you get on your newsletter?
I'm curious, so give me a number! (See what I did there? ;))

THINGS IN BRIEF
1. The £1 ($1) toolkit strategy
In his last newsletter, Niall Ratcliffe explained how he got 2,000 new subscribers from a simple £1 offer!
It wasn't his idea. He cloned it, and you can too.
The process
1. Create something insanely valuable. It must be $100 worth of your best stuff like frameworks, templates, tools, or whatever makes you different.
2. Put a $1 price tag on it and launch it to your audience on LinkedIn/social media.
3. Let the value-to-price gap do the marketing. When people see they're getting $100 of value for a dollar, they'll talk about it. That word-of-mouth creates a domino effect.
What will you make this weekend?
2. Public work
I often search for unusual images online.
There are several great websites that offer access to images, illustrations, and art that are free to use in your blog content, social media posts or newsletter.
While everyone else generates images and designs with AI, you'll get scroll-stopping visuals like this:

Warning: You may spend more time browsing than you intended to!
3. Awesome subject line hooks
Yesterday, I found a quick copywriting lesson on email subject lines. Check out this swipe file of 6 types of hooks to make you stand out in a crowded inbox.

ONE LAST THING
☝️ A simple tactic to earn $100 next week
Since you enjoyed last week's tip, here's another overlooked tactic you can use to generate revenue:
Create a “Tools I Use Every Day” Page
Put together a “Resources” or “Tools I Use” page and link to it in your newsletter.
You could add a page on your website, or start with a basic Notion or Google Doc.
Add your categories (Writing, Design, Growth, Analytics, etc.) and drop short notes like:
Beehiiv — my go-to for managing multiple newsletters without losing my mind.
Fathom Analytics — simple, privacy-friendly analytics.
Then share it in your newsletter like this:
“I often get asked what tools I use, so here’s my full stack.”
When your tool stack changes, it's easy to update, and you can re-share it every month.
How does this make money?
If you add affiliate links, this resource will quietly generate income. One or two conversions could easily earn you an extra $100+/month.
Do you want more tips like this?
Hit reply with a "YES" and I'll post another one next time.
Enjoy your weekend and I'll see you next week! :)
