Nathan Barry, well known creator of ConvertKit started in 2013, tells us how rejecting an offer of hundreds of millions from Spotify made him think of an innovative way to get his team liquidity!
In 2021, Spotify reached out to buy @ConvertKit for hundreds of millions.
I said no.
Instead we came up with an innovative way to get liquidity for our team:

Back in 2018 after 5 year of activity, he put 10% of the company into an equity pool for the team.
“Giving out real ownership to the team that built ConvertKit is one of my favorite moments in company history”
However, 3 years later, after refusing such a large sum from Spotify, he needed to come up with a new plan to level with his team.
25 team members sold 3.18% of their shares, totaling 200 million dollars, to 48 trusted investors.
The result is we did a secondary round with 48 individual investors who are long-time friends and advocates for ConvertKit.
They bought 3.18% of ConvertKit at a $200 million valuation.
25 team members sold shares for house down payments, paying off debt, and diversifying.

Nathan showed great ethical entrepreneurial reflection, in understanding that ConvertKit is such a success thanks to his team (personal talent is great, but in unity we thrive).
Thinking outside the box to offer both a steady job to its employees and an opportunity to be part of something bigger and get more out of their dedication is demonstrating amazing skills in both business and human relations.
Now again in 2023, some shares are for sale!
If you are interested in being part of an ethical, humane base business, look no further!

👏 No moral argument for staying on X
Almost a year now that Elon Musk acquired Twitter, which is now X. Joan Westenberg, Australian tech leader, decided to walk away from her 30,000 follower X account! And she makes a great argument:
“The only way to be values-driven is to be ruthlessly moral in where we engage”
Denouncing the desire of the social media platform to “reward controversy, conflict and outrage”
Her approach is applauded by many.
Is it time for new “clean” social media platforms to emerge?
