In the latest A Media Operator newsletter, Jacob wrote that newsletter businesses have taken off over the last few years due to the fact that platforms like Substack and beehiiv have:
unlocked the potential for the audience to feel part of the experience
He goes on to say that one of the metrics of a successful newsletter is the reply rate, and niche newsletter operators have a big advantage in connecting with their audience:
And I think, when it comes down to it, the fact that the audience feels as if their voice is being heard gives them a feeling of connection with the newsletter. Unfortunately, many legacy media companies don’t do this with their newsletters. It’s very much a one-way road. The newsletter is thought of as just another means of distributing content rather than a way to hear from the audience.

🖱️ 1000% CTRs?
Alex Garcia in a recent Marketing Examined newsletter wrote about how the biggest YouTuber, Mr Beast, was achieving insane click through rates with his newsletter.
It comes down to creating interactive games within the emails, with buttons you have to click a certain number of times to unlock offers, explained in this post:
Mr. Beast's Feastables sent an email to 200,000 subs and it drove 2,000,000+ clicks.
That's an average of 10 clicks per recipient.
How? Interactive emails.
Feastable customers wanted an extension of Mr.Beast's videos.
That meant giveaways, challenges, and contests.

On average, each subscriber was clicking 10 times on an email, which, by our math, makes for a 1000% CTR showing up in their ESP.
High click through rates demonstrate high engagement, they build behaviour which leads to more clicks on ads (which means you can make more sponsorship revenue) and they improve email deliverability.
